An introduction to Turkish Coffee: more than just a beverage
Turkish Coffee is the oldest method of brewing in the world and is prepared from the Ottoman Period to present day. It means more to Turkish people than just a drink, because it is engrained in the culture and daily lifestyle. Whilst providing a relaxing moment every day, it also lets friends gather together and tells the future to those who are curious enough. Even at one of the most special days in one’s life, when a potential groom comes and asks for the hand of his potential bride, the way the bride makes Turkish Coffee is an important test.
Traditional Turkish Coffee was brought to Istanbul in the 15th century by Özdemir Pasha, the governor of Yemen. Over time it was spread through Europe and eventually over the whole world. Nowadays it is consumed in Turkey, Greece, the Balkans, the Middle Eastern and North and East Africa. Off course people in Europe can also visit a Turkish market and brew their own traditional coffee. Or if they are lucky, a Turkish Coffeehouse might be in the neighbourhood.
Turkish Coffee is unfiltered and therefor the grind is much thinner. The coffee is mixed with water and traditionally boiled in a copper coffee pot in the shape of a small saucepan. According to your personal preference the coffee is served with no sugar, medium sugar or a lot of sugar. No milk gets involved: Turkish coffee is served black. Because of the manner of brewing, it gets a creamy foam layer, which gives that smooth and round finish.
