3 things you need to know before retiring in Turkey

Many people choose to live out their retirement under the Turkish sun, in places like Alanya, Antalya and Bodrum. The property market in these places is most certainly very attractive, along with the low taxes and cost of living. We have listed 3 things you need to know before moving to Turkey for your retirement.

Decide on the area you want to live in

Before you commit to an area in Alanya, it might be useful to stay in the area first. You can rent an apartment in the area, or stay at a hotel. It might be the case though, that you have allready stayed in the area before and know the area well. Then you might decide to directly buy property there. Ask yourself these questions about the area:

  • Are there any amenities within walking distance?
  • How is the public transport in the area?
  • Do the properties situated in the area sell quick and easy?
  • Will you have neighbours and which language do they speak, for feature support?
  • Will the property be easy to maintain or renovate over the years?

Determine if the property is suitable in older age

If you want to live in the property for many years, then a place where everything is one level is probably your best option. In Alanya you can find apartments for sale, but also one-storied villa’s which fit this description.

It is sensible to review the living space and make adaptions to the new home, so you can continue to live there in older age. The most important factor will be the kitchen, where the current design can provide possible issues. Consider the positioning of the sink, oven, hob, fridge and dishwasher. These should be placed in a triangle shape for convenience. Also consider the hights of appliances and have the oven and dishwasher installed at counter hight. This prevents bending and stretching.

The bathroom is another room that is used frequently and can be dangerous for elderly people because of the wet surfaces. Choose a walk-in shower or bath, possible with a reclined seat built in. For showers seats are widely available to give you even more stability during your shower.

Consider the costs of moving abroad

The costs of moving to Alanya will be different for everyone and it depends on the area you want to live in and what you will take along with you. A few points of consideration:

  • The costs that come with selling or renting out your current property in your home country.
  • Shipping costs if you would like to take your furniture or larger personal belonings with you.
  • Exchange rates and transaction costs for the purchase of a new home.
  • Getting expert advice: HomeCatcher helps you both on taxation and legal matters when you are buying a property in Alanya.
  • Relevant medical costs: in Turkey you can benefit from healthcare insurance.
